As summer weddings take a step back, a new wave of seasonal trends are emerging. Autumn and winter ceremonies bring with them a shift in both mood and menswear. As we transition into the colder months, we'll see deeper colour palettes, rich textures, and tailored silhouettes that feel both timeless and directional. From rustic elegance to mix-and-match styling, the modern groom is striking a balance between traditional and individual flair. Nicola Barker, Head of Buying at Suit Direct, breaks down the standout trends set to define autumn and winter nuptials.

"This autumn and winter, we're seeing a broader range of groom trends. From a renewed focus on fabric and texture to the rise of modern black tie and mix-and-match styling. We'll see an increased desire for craftsmanship and details that make a look feel personal."

Mix-and-match styling:
"Groomsmen styling is evolving beyond the traditional uniform look. Rather than identical suits and matching details, the modern groom party is embracing tonal coordination through suiting and accessories. Think ties, pocket squares, and boutonnières in varied shades within the same colour family, or complementary fabrics that bring added depth and interest to allow the groom's party to express individuality."
"This approach allows for subtle variation in textures, while one groomsman might opt for a wool blend suit, another might opt for a soft flannel, while maintaining the same colour scheme to maintain a polished group aesthetic."
"This shift reflects the growing trend in bridesmaid styling, where cohesion comes from thoughtful colour stories rather than matching outfits, lending to a more individual feel."
"This trend will extend to statement groom styling, as more grooms embrace individuality through standout suiting, think double-breasted silhouettes, colour contrast, or textured fabrics. Deep jewel tones like burgundy, emerald, and sapphire are key here."

Earthy neutrals and rustic elegance:
"For countryside and rustic weddings, tonal earthy shades like sand, taupe, sage, and warm browns are setting a grounded yet elevated tone. These colours not only complement the natural backdrops of the season but also reflect a broader shift towards stripped-back and intentional weddings that prioritise authenticity and atmosphere."
"While wider wedding trends continue to emphasise depth and tactility, this comes to life in these palettes. Textured fabrics like brushed wool, tweed, and soft flannel enhance the richness of these tones, making them an ideal choice for rustic wedding settings like outdoor escapes or barn ceremonies."
"These shades pair well with tonal layering or contrasting neutrals to create a look that feels both refined, effortless, and thoughtfully considered."

Modern black tie:
"The classic tuxedo remains popular, with its enduring appeal fuelled by high-profile celebrity weddings that have put modern black tie back in the spotlight. This look offers grooms a chance to stand on equal stature to the bridal gown, offering timeless sophistication and formal elegance."
"Modern black tie is far from static. Today, grooms are experimenting with subtle updates that add personality while respecting tradition. Think alternative silhouettes or unexpected textures like opting for a velvet suit or one with a custom lapel in a contrasting fabric."

Heritage reimagined:
"While traditional fabrics like tweed, corduroy, and herringbone remain a staple in autumn and winter weddings, we'll see them refreshed with contemporary silhouettes."
"We'll see a heightened focus on craftsmanship and detail throughout this trend, with an emphasis on quality cloth, construction and fit. We can expect to see premium details such as curved facings, corozo buttons, and elevated linings featuring prints to add a sentimental touch."
"Modern design details will also be embraced here. We've seen a shift in lapels becoming wider and more dramatic, with chic silhouettes. Grooms are also adopting lapels in more contrasting fabrics or shades, such as a tweed blazer with a contrasting leather trim."

Modern minimalism:
"Clean lines and precision tailoring will continue to be a popular choice for grooms, grounded in elevated minimalism. This season, we'll see minimalism take on subtle expressions of personal style through colour, texture, and styling."
"We'll see the minimalism trend evolve in destination weddings in particular. While simple and relaxed tailoring remains popular for warmer destinations, with the shift in the season, we'll see lightweight linens being worn in warmer, autumnal tones that still fit within minimalist aesthetics – think sage green, terracotta, and ivory."
"Often favoured for warmer climates, buggy lined, or 'butterfly' blazers will dominate here, offering the breathability of an unlined jacket along the back, with the structure of curved panels across the top of the shoulders that resemble butterfly wings."
