Brides and grooms to be with their hearts set on a whimsical Valentine's Day wedding this February can expect a magical day oozing with romance – think candlelit rooms adorned with impressive floristry in pastel hues or dramatic bouquets in bold colours, simply striking against an elegant white gown.

When it comes to choosing your wedding flowers at this time of year, General Manager of Liverpool based florist Dutch Flower Shop Michelle Conroy, believes that couples are spoilt for choice. Despite having fewer options available in terms of seasonality, some of the most popular flowers are in bloom at this time of year and add an extra element to any venue or bridal look.

Michelle said: “Dutch Flower Shop has been working closely with brides and grooms for almost four decades and has created floral designs for hundreds of bespoke weddings which have taken place throughout all seasons – although our choice of flowers differs between months, we are certainly never short of inspiration. This time of year offers a romantic theme that can be adapted into breath taking flower arrangements.

“Floristry adds another element of excitement to your special day and choosing the right flowers that are in season for your February wedding can add warmth and life to the occasion, even when it is chilly outside! Although Valentine's Day is synonymous with the classic rose, as florists we work with couples to help them really rediscover their possibilities, think outside the box and choose something totally unique that still exudes the allure of love.

“Ranunculus make a cheaper alternative to roses and look just as beautiful in the right arrangement and colours, which can vary between vivid pinks and oranges to dreamy pastels. They can be paired with leafy foliage for a more rustic theme or combined with elegant fabrics such as satin for a softer look. White and blush colours can be combined with fiery orange or yellow to add a pop of colour.

“Although typical colours for Valentine's Day may include soft pinks or vivid reds, don't be shy of putting your own twist on things. With winter weather in mind, rich purples and deep burgundies are a popular colour choice for many couples and there are ample flowers to bring this vision to life. The ever-popular Calla Lily comes in a stunning spectrum of colours as well as crisp white - an eye-catching combination. The contrast of white against burgundy for example provides a luxurious, winter appropriate feel.

“For a classic vibe, couples can opt for the popular Tulip. A firm favourite that stands the test of time, a tulip flower arrangement offers simplicity and femininity in its finest form. Available in almost any colour you can imagine, this option really allows couples to get expressive or they can be combined with simple red roses for a truly elegant option.

“Alongside beautiful flowers, there's also the option to add an accent piece to make a real statement. At this time of year, the unique Brunia Albiflora can be beautifully incorporated into any bridal arrangement or to add a real touch of magic, while the rather untraditional Dusty Miller provides accents of silver white for a frosty touch.

“This is the perfect time of year to get creative. As a florist, part of our job is to source an arrangement that suits your personality, colour scheme and looks fantastic on the day, whether it's part of your table arrangement, bouquet or general décor.”
