In the driving seat: Should we book a celebrant and what are the benefits?

We posed the following question to local celebrant, Jen Walker...

Our wedding planner has suggested we hire a celebrant for our big day, but we're not sure what the role of a celebrant is. Should we book one, and what are the benefits?

Jen says: The best part of having a celebrant-led ceremony is that you're in complete control of your entire wedding day. Having a ceremony that reflects you and your style, including incorporating any cultural, religious or family traditions can really set the tone for the entire day, so its important to get it right. Being able to choose something as simple as what time your ceremony will start or what venue you choose can have hugely positive impact on the flow of your day and your budget.

Are your parents contributing to your wedding day?

New research from Wealthify has found that just over a third (35.7%) of parents in the UK plan to contribute financially to their children's weddings.

More than 40% of parents in the UK plan to contribute between £1,000 and £5,000 with an additional quarter planning to contribute between £5,000 to £15,000 on their children's big days. A further 1 in 10 plan to fork out a substantial £15,000 to £30,000.

In a post-pandemic world, where many celebrations were cancelled or postponed, Brits are celebrating their nuptials in a big way. Data shows that we are spending more than ever, and London parents are the most generous on average, willing to cough up £14,757.14 to see their children tie the knot.

On paper: We're trying to choose our wedding stationery...

We posed Ling Warlow of Paper by Dragonfly the following question...

We're trying to choose our wedding stationery – what styles and designs are popular in 2022? Are there any big trends we should watch out for?

Ling says: 2022 will be an interesting year in terms of wedding stationery and styling! Key trends that emerged early 2020 are still popular, such as the vogue for foliage, especially in the form of laurels, weraths and watercolour illustrations, but there are also new directions to look out for. My top three trends for this year are minimal styling, dark florals and all things celestial.

Outdoor civil weddings and civil partnerships made permanent

One positive that came from Covid affecting the wedding industry, and trust us there are not many, was that it highlighted how archaic our weddings laws are in the UK and how badly they needed modernising to reflect couples' desires.Temporary legislation allowing outdoor civil weddings and partnerships to take place outside of a permanent structure such as a pagoda, has been in place since last summer. At the time it allowed Covid-secure weddings to go ahead, however, the move was so widely received that from April it will be a permanent change.

Should you get married on Mother's Day?

Choosing your wedding date is one of the most important things when it comes to planning your wedding. We are very quickly moving from traditional etiquette into a society where we are far more flexible with these. Award Winning UK Wedding Planner - Illy Goodall from Illy Elizabeth Weddings shares her insight into whether you should get married on Mother's Day.

There are certain days within the year that you should try to avoid getting married, however with the backlog of weddings this year we are using any given date possible. Whilst I don't think there is personally anything wrong with setting the date for Mother's Day, it can be inconvenient for some people who wish to spend this day with family.

Snap happy: We posed Karen Boyle of Andy Boyle Photography the following question...

We posed Karen Boyle of Andy Boyle Photography the following question...

We're looking for a wedding photographer, but we're a bit worried about booking someone online we've never met. Do you have any suggestions?

In this day and age, it seems our entire lives can be run online, and indeed over the last two years much of our lives have been forced online. Whether it's ordering a pizza or shopping for a wedding photographer, it's often our first port of call in a busy life. When your life is hectic and you haven't managed to meet photographers at wedding fairs or other weddings, looking at their websites and chatting online can be fitted in any time. What catches your eye first will be the style of images they present. Do they appeal to your own sense of style?

Dream wedding vibes - but make it legal!

The wedding industry has undergone a seismic shift in the last few years. As a result of changing family structures, as well as the impact of the Covid pandemic, what we know as 'traditional' weddings are becoming less common.

What we are seeing instead is a move towards alternative weddings which couples feel better fit with their personal tastes. Restrictions have meant that smaller weddings have been chosen, sometimes in favour of waiting out the lockdowns. Thankfully, as things start to return to normal, larger weddings are back on the market.

However, at Stowe Family Law, we are seeing a considerable change in the approaches couples are taking to their nuptials. Our experts have recently conducted a survey on the changing views around marriage and the popularity, among younger couples in particular, of non-traditional weddings. The survey polled 500 people across the UK to understand more fully how the concept of marriage is shifting to better reflect modern familial demands.
